The couple, both Black Americans, were playing with their daughter in their living room when they heard loud knocks on their door. Little did they know, their peaceful evening would soon turn into a distressing ordeal.

A white police officer named Cody Marler, oblivious to the gravity of his assumptions, approached Cyrah and callously inquired if the woman in the living room was his “baby mama or girlfriend.” The blatant disregard for the possibility of a married black couple was not only inappropriate but deeply offensive. Cyrah, rightfully angered by the officer’s ignorance, swiftly corrected him, asserting that the woman was his wife.

The confrontation escalated as Cyrah pulled out his phone to record the interaction, shedding light on the unjust treatment they were enduring. The video quickly went viral, drawing attention to the racial profiling and discrimination faced by Black families, even within the confines of their own homes.

As public outcry mounted, the Suisin City police department issued a public apology, acknowledging the misconduct of Officer Marler. It was later revealed that the officers had arrived at the wrong address, compounding the egregiousness of their actions. The attempted welfare check on a 3-year-old had led them to the Hawkins’ doorstep by mistake, subjecting an innocent family to unwarranted harassment and intimidation.
